Below, we’ll cover everything you need to know about multiplayer in Project Zomboid, including how to host and join open multiplayer servers and how to collaborate with your friends.

Project Zomboid Server Hosting: Rent Your Gg Host Game Server

To play Project Zomboid multiplayer, you need to host or join a server. These options are located in the main menu.

If you want to join the server, click join, then select internet in the top bar. This will bring up a long list of all servers that are currently online. You can filter this list in different ways, so if you want to find other players we recommend to filter empty servers. Once you find the server you want to join, click on it to display the server details on the right.

Here you will need to enter a password if there is one server (many are open for anyone to participate) and create an account name and password. Creating an account is mandatory if you want to join the multiplayer. When you’re ready, click on the join server to create a new character and enter the world. If you want to survive the first day, make sure you start with the best character.

When joining a persistent multiplayer server, it’s important to note that you won’t start on the first day of the apocalypse, unless you join as soon as the host creates the server. It’s likely that time has already passed, which means the water and electricity may be out, loot may be missing, and other players may have moved on to houses and cars. Survival online can be pretty tough, so if you want the best chance of survival, be sure to familiarize yourself with our Project Zomboid tips and tricks.

When you’re ready to quit, simply go to the pause menu (remember, this will actually pause the game) and quit. The server will automatically save your progress as you play. If you want to join the same server again, check your favorite tab because it should save the server there so you can easily access it again and pick up where you left off.

If you choose to host your own server, you’ll have much more control. You start by setting the server name and memory size. When you’re ready to dive into the details, click Manage settings to open the toolbox and start tweaking every little part of your experience. Here you can customize the apocalypse perfectly to your taste, almost every aspect of the game is available for you to change. You can also set the maximum number of players, change the modes you want to use Steam Workshop, and specify how players can interact with each other.

When creating a server, the most important part to choose is whether to make it private or public. If you want to set up a co-op server to play with your friends in Project Zomboid, go to the Details tab (located at the top of the admin settings menu) and make sure the Public checkbox is unchecked. We also recommend that you set a password and share it with your friends. If you want to host an open multiplayer server where anyone can play, check the public box and start playing. This will list your server in the server browser, allowing all players to join.
