In a statement sent Monday, June 27, Sheetz said all of its stations will reduce the price of 88 unleaded gas to $3.99 and 85 flex ethanol fuel to $3.49, effective immediately.
Sheetz Drops Unleaded 88 Gas Prices Below $2 For Thanksgiving
The price for 88 unleaded is nearly $1 below the national average of $4.88 as of Tuesday, June 28, according to AAA. Meanwhile, the average price of regular unleaded gas in Virginia is $4.70.
However, the prices of other types of fuel were not mentioned in the press release. A photo taken by WFXR sister station WCMH in Ohio Sheetz shows they didn’t get the same deal, with 87 unleaded still going for $4.77 a gallon.
According to the US Department of Energy, unleaded 87, 88 and E85 are just three of several common grades of gasoline, with unleaded 89 through 94 appearing at other gas stations.
The numbers represent the octane number of the gas. The U.S. Department of Energy says the rating can indicate how well the fuel can withstand engine knock, which is when fuel burns unevenly in the engine and can cause damage to the engine’s cylinder and pistons, according to Firestone Auto Care. Most cars can run on 87 unleaded engines, but some luxury cars require higher-grade gas to run their high-performance engines.
Sheetz To Lower Gas Prices In Nc Just In Time For July 4
The best way to find out what type of gas to use in your car, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, is to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual to find out what octane number the manufacturer recommends you use.
But the government agency also says that while gas with a lower octane number than the manual says can damage a car’s engine, gas with a higher octane number than the manual says can be used.
“For most vehicles, higher-octane fuel can improve performance and gas mileage and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by several percent during heavy duty operations such as towing a trailer or hauling heavy loads, especially in hot weather,” the agency wrote. “However, under normal driving conditions, you may have little or no benefit.”
E85 flex fuel, another discounted gas with Sheetz, is specifically for cars marked as capable of using flex fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy said a common way to tell if a car is approved for flex fuel in post-2008 models is to look for a yellow gas cap or an “FFV” or “Flex Fuel” symbol on the car’s body. . However, the government agency also reported that a flex-fuel car that uses E85 instead of unleaded 88 also gets 15 to 27% fewer miles per gallon.
