State Farm is available nationwide and caters to nearly all types of people behind the wheel: new drivers, teen drivers, sports car drivers, eco-drivers, business travelers, business owners, and car collectors—it’s even ranked as “best overall” on both lists. CNBC Select from the top auto insurance companies for young adults and the top auto insurance companies for high-risk drivers. Its auto insurance coverage options vary by state but include collision insurance, comprehensive insurance, rental insurance, rideshare insurance, emergency roadside services, and more. State Farm does not offer gap insurance, but does offer similar coverage through the Payoff Protector® program.
As noted above, State Farm has one of the highest average JD Power scores, a rating by a market intelligence firm that analyzes consumer data. In other words, State Farm customers are quite satisfied with the service. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Complaint Index, State Farm also receives significantly fewer complaints when compared to other companies of its size.
As with all auto insurance companies, the rate and overall cost of a person’s policy depends on driving history, credit score, type of coverage, deductible and discount. CNBC Select calculates State Farm’s average annual premium with data based on 40-year-old drivers with clean driving records and good credit (more on this calculation in our methodology below). We found that State Farm’s average annual premium for minimum coverage was $464, while the average annual premium for maximum coverage was $1,480.
State Farm offers convenient features for insured users. For example, the State Farm Select Service® the program provides customers with a network of auto repair shops that offer claims service options for vehicle estimates and repairs. This service will even pick up and drop off your vehicle upon request.
And the State Farm mobile app (available on the App Store and Google Play) makes it easy to file a claim or get roadside assistance to tow, jump, or locksmiths while you’re on the go. The app also allows users to access their ID cards, view all their insurance policies in one place, pay bills, and connect directly with State Farm agents.
Simple Insight® from the State Farm section also has specific advice on auto insurance, driving tips and maintenance. For example, there are articles discussing how to stay safe while driving, tips on buying and selling a car, plus tips for driving in bad weather.
State Farm offers many discount options, which vary from state to state and can help lower insurance premiums:
- Good drivers can save up to 30% with Drive Safe & SaveTM application
- Drivers under the age of 25 with no accidents due to tort or traffic violations in the last three years can save as much as 15% with Steer Clear® application
- Teen drivers (up to 25 years old) with good grades can save up to 25%
- Students who go to school can save money if they only drive home from school during school breaks
- Safe vehicle discounts, including: up to 40% passive restraint discount on medical-related coverage for 1993 and older vehicles equipped with factory-installed airbags or other passive restraint systems; anti-theft discount if your vehicle has an alarm or other approved anti-theft device
- Families with multiple household vehicles can save up to 20% if they insure more than one family-owned car with State Farm
- Model year 1994 and newer vehicles may receive a vehicle safety discount
- Package discount
State Farm offers much more than auto insurance, and combining multiple insurance products into a single quote will likely save you money on the total cost of your policy.
State Farm’s other insurance products include homeowners, renters, condos, life insurance, pet health insurance, and more — adding one of these policies to your auto insurance policy can save up to 17%. When you bundle auto and home insurance, the State Farm website claims you can save up to $1,127 per year on average.
State Farm’s auto insurance offerings are quite competitive with other companies in the market. You may find lower-cost policies with auto insurance companies like GEICO, which appear to have the lowest average premiums for both minimum and comprehensive coverage. And Farmers Insurance takes the cake with potential savings, offering 22 types of discounts on auto insurance, which is the most of any company we reviewed for our “best auto insurance companies” ranking.

To determine the best auto insurance company, CNBC Select analyzed dozens of US insurance companies that have policies to suit a variety of needs.
When narrowing down and ranking the best auto insurers, we focused on average cost, coverage, availability, ease of use, and customer satisfaction using data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, AM Best, JD Power ratings, and auto insurance premium data from Bankrate. com.
The average annual premium data is based on 40-year-old drivers with clean driving records and good credit. Drivers insure the 2020 Toyota Camry, commuting five days a week and driving 12,000 miles annually, with the following full coverage limits:
- $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- Property damage liability of $50,000 per accident
- $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injuries per person
- $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injuries per accident
- $500 collision reduction
- $500 comprehensive reduction
