Dilip Asbe spoke exclusively to CNBC-TV18 about various payment methods, including UPI Lite, credit cards and chat payments.
Dilip Asbe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said Friday that voice, UPI lite and credit card payments will drive the next wave of growth for payments in India. Asbe, in exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18, talked about different payment methods and added that they have plans around conversational payments for next year to drive growth.
Payments processed during chat/messaging conversations are called conversation payments. These payments occur during live chat.
At UPI Lite, Asbe said that traction increased especially after Paytm arrived. Daily transactions on UPI Lite have crossed 2 lakh, he added.
Asbe further said that the government has provided subsidies to UPI and the results have not been seen. In FY 2022, the government is spending Rs. 1,044 crore as a subsidy to process UPI transactions free of charge.
On the outlook going forward, Asbe said, “We are in talks with the RBI and the government to ensure investment in UPI continues. We will not see the 10x growth in UPI that we are targeting without investment. However, we are very bullish on payouts and have. just started and 10x growth is possible in the next few years. The whole ecosystem needs to go very fast to deliver features for UPI growth.”
“We still haven’t finished our work with UPI. Our aim is to get reasonable scale in UPI, Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) and others before we talk about new products,” he added.
“We want to get out in March with double digit credit card spend share in the market,” he said CNBC-TV18.
